Creating More Inclusive Faith Communities: Transgender 101

hosted by Calvary United Methodist Church
Sunday, November 14th
Lunch: 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Even for faith communities with an inclusive stance towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, creating a loving and supportive community for everyone – especially for folks who have been most marginalized and misunderstood by dominant religious cultures – can be a challenge. Good intentions aren’t always enough. As institutions and as individuals, we need to make sure we’re aware of the issues faced by our communities and transform that knowledge into concrete ways we can demonstrate our support.

A lot of us know about the “LGB” part of the acronym, but are a little fuzzy on the “T.” If you’re unfamiliar with issues related to the transgender community or have questions, then this workshop a great opportunity to learn more. Danny DePuy, the Assistant Director of the LGBTQ Center at UNC-Chapel Hill, will present an overview of key terms and concepts, discuss policy issues related to transgender rights, and direct participants to additional resources.

Following Danny’s presentation, folks from Calvary will guide a conversation about ways that people of faith can be allies for trans people, in their spiritual communities and beyond. If there is interest around this topic, we may look for ways to continue the discussion around making our faith communities more inclusive for all people.

We will begin serving a light lunch at 12:30 pm. You are also welcome to bring your own. Please RSVP so we can have a head count and indicate if you plan to join us for lunch. The event is free of charge. We welcome donations to offset the costs of food and drink.

Danny DePuy is the Assistant Director of the LGBTQ Center at UNC-Chapel Hill. Danny is fully driven by the mission to foster a safe and welcoming environment for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. Danny is passionate about challenging the gender binary, and really, binaries of all kinds! Danny grew up in California, but has been in the Triangle area for over ten years and is happy to have found a home here in our little corner of the world.

Problems Forgiving People? Watch This Movie – November 7th

In Amish Grace, a grieving Amish mother struggles to forgive the woman whose husband killed her daughter and four other innocent schoolchildren in this drama inspired by the tragic true-life events that unfolded in a Nickel Mines schoolhouse just four short years ago, on October 2, 2006. It was a senseless crime that no one could have foreseen. In the wake of the shooting, the media descended upon Nickel Mines, and the parents of the murdered schoolchildren remained steadfast in their promise to practice forgiveness – except for Ida Graber. Devastated by the loss of her beloved daughter, Ida found herself unable to forgive the gunman and his wife. With each passing day, Ida’s sorrow continued to fester, testing her faith in ways that she, and many others in her community, never dreamt.

Join several pastors/ministers from our community on Sunday, November 7th at 5 pm for a screening of this amazing story and a dialog on forgiveness afterwards. We’ll be meeting at Infinity Diamond Club Empowerment Center, 1921-A North Pointe Drive, Durham, NC 27705.
