Google puts C-View Street Worship Center on the map

Durham, NC – December 15, 2010 – We’ve been urging Google Maps to let people know exactly where our newly-purchased Ministry Center is, and we get word today that it is now on the map. Even though they got the street address wrong, it points to the right place. You can use this map to find directions.

Renovation efforts are proceeding. Under the guidance of our Project Coordinator and our Board of Directors, workers are tearing down walls, shoring up the foundation, working on storm water management, and making it a place we can call Home. Here is a recent view of the chancel area.

What a mess!

What a mess! We’ve got more work to do!

Come to our Prayer Service this Saturday at 10:00 am to see what happens next.

Imani MCC Purchases Property for Its Future Ministry Center

Durham, NC – September 20, 2010 - Imani MCC, an affirming congregation of the MCC Churches, recently purchased property on C-View Street in Southeast Durham that will become its future ministry center. The church was able to purchase the property without a mortgage and paid cash for it at closing.

The property, located at 3602 C-View Street, is nestled into the corner of a quiet neighborhood in the Lowes Grove Heights subdivision. It is very close to property that is a part of Research Triangle Park.

This new ministry center will provide access for many people who are seeking a congregation that affirms God’s love for everyone. Located less than 2.5 miles from I-40 and just two blocks away from East Cornwallis Road and Apex Highway (NC 55), the property is very easy to find.

The existing building on the property was built in 1976 and the sanctuary there can currently seat about 60 people. When seeing the property for the first time, Julie Taylor, Treasurer for the congregation, said, “It certainly needs a lot of love.” The existing church building “hasn’t been maintained very well,” she said. “It will take a lot of work to make it into the kind of facility we can use.”

“This is an opportunity we just can’t pass up,” said Julie Weathers, a lay leader of the congregation. “We have the money, and we can provide the love that it needs,” she said.

“This church has been working and praying for this for a long time,” said the Rev. Phil Mathews, Interim Pastor. “Imani has been faithful for 13 years, but this will launch the church into a whole new dimension of faithfulness. It will give this congregation new ways to do ministry in Durham.” The word imani means “faith” in Swahili.

During its meeting in September 2010, Imani MCC adopted a new focus statement: “Imani, a church where, through faith, all can experience and express God’s irresistible love through worship, word, oneness, wonder and witness.” This purchase comes less than a month after Rev. Mathews, began focusing on “A New Season” during his weekly sermons to the small congregation that currently meets in the Sanctuary at Calvary UMC on East Trinity Avnue.
