“Mary’s Song: a 2010 Advent Journey”

Luke 1:46-56

In response to the angel Gabriel’s prophetic word to her, Mary breaks forth in jubilant song which echoes the words of earlier songs in the Hebrew scriptures. With power from some unseen place within her being this young peasant girl declares her devotion to God by surrendering her life to a dream, and a life, she had never planned for herself. Her song has come to be known as the “Magnificat,” which means “to magnify.” As we journey together into the holy seasons of Advent and Christmas, let us take notes from Mary on just what it may mean to “magnify” God through our daily living.
