Rev. Phil Mathews, Pastor
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Eph. 4:11-13 (NIV)
Rev. Venson Phillip (Phil) Mathews was elected Imani MCC’s second Pastor after serving as Interim Pastor for three years. When he arrived in Durham over three years ago, with an eighteen month contract, he had no idea he was coming here to stay, nor did the congregation. After three years on a journey of healing together he and the members of Imani decided it was time make a firm and long lasting commitment to minister and grow together in the coming years.
Since he’s been on the planet for nearly 56 years, there’s plenty that could be said about Rev. Mathews, yet his desire is that anyone reading this gets the “essential Venson Phillip Mathews” as they read these words. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) are the words from scripture that have served as the vision/mission statement for Rev. Mathews for a number of years now. After a very challenging and wounding childhood his life long journey has been one of seeking healing, wholeness, the true oneness with Life that is our spiritual birthright. He has come to believe that it is primarily through coming to this place of “stillness” that one can experience the deepest levels and manifestations of healing, wholeness, and oneness with All That Is.
As a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Rev. Mathews has come to accept his primary role on the planet to be that of a Healer. He believes that any and everything he is called to be involved in will in some way lead to not only the healing of others but his own healing as well. He firmly believes that all of us are seeking, desiring healing in all of its many forms, and that as one person heals, we all heal. His intention is to always and everywhere be an instrument of healing and grace.
